Reasons Your Water Heater is Leaking

Reasons Your Water Heater is Leaking

Have you gone into your basement, closet, or wherever you store your water heater and stepped in water? Did you then realize that water is coming directly from your unit? No one wants to run into a leaking water heater, but it’s one of the most common water heater issues we see.

With solid construction built to last, you may be surprised that water heaters leak so often. But if you’ve bought your water heater from a reliable source, it’s almost always an operational issue.

Crack or Break

The most obvious way your water heater would leak is if there is a break or crack in the unit wall. It may be small and just dripping for now, but it will likely worsen if not addressed.

If you notice a leak coming from your heater but can’t immediately tell the source, inspect the unit for small cracks and see if you can find where the water flow begins.

Loose Fitting

Leaks can also come from loose connections and fittings around the unit. This is less likely if a qualified plumber installed your system. Check the connections to your water heater and ensure none are loose, and allow water to be released.

Broken Pressure Valve

Your pressure release valve is crucial for protecting your home from an exploding water heater. When too much pressure builds inside the tank, the valve opens and releases excess water. However, if the valve is leaking, it is not functioning correctly and needs to be replaced. If it still leaks after being replaced, there is too much pressure inside your system, and you should have a plumber take a look.
