Lighting Trends of 2020

Interior design trends are always shifting year after year. Whether you decide to buck the latest fads or implement this year’s fashions, you should know what’s going to be popular in 2020.

Lighting’s Impact on Design

Lighting has a more substantial impact on a room than you may think. Not only does the way a room is lit affect the feel and mood instilled, but a fixture can also bring attention to itself to make a statement.

Consider how noticeable you want your lighting to be. Maybe you want that “wow” chandelier in your entry hall or that bold pendant lighting above your kitchen island. On the other hand, we’ve picked up on more subtle trends such as clear fixtures that are satisfying, but not necessarily eye-catching. Here are the lighting trends of 2020:

Styles

Industrial

Industrial styles have been popular for a few years now, and we don’t expect them to fall out of favor in 2020. What are the defining characteristics of industrial lighting? Here are the main materials and aesthetics:

  • Exposed Bulbs

  • Dark Steel or Wood

  • Wire Shades

  • Functionality Over Elegance

There’s no hiding or blending in with industrial lighting. Industrial materials are typically unfinished or made with an intentional, distressed look to them. The fixtures and connections on industrial pieces are never hidden or covered.

There’s a simplicity and timelessness to industrial lighting, but you’ll want to pair it with other modern pieces. Industrial styles blend with eclectic designs as well.

One last note about industrial style lighting: you don’t have to sacrifice energy-efficiency if you like the style of the Edison bulb. There are LED alternatives that last longer and are more efficient, yet look indistinguishable from Edison bulbs, if you are looking for that retro-feel.

Geometric

Styles trends have been moving more towards simplicity and form over the past few years. We’ve seen that affect lighting fixtures as well. Simple geometric shapes are becoming more popular. Whether it’s circular housings and shades, or chandeliers made up of mostly straight lines and angles, geometric elements are the new hot thing.

Geometric designs can fit in with a lot of different color palettes. If you like the more industrial look, you can easily add a geometric piece made of dark steel to the rest of your furnishings. If you prefer some of the brighter modern options, geometric designs can fit in with those well. Color is where separate styles can find common ground, and geometric style allows you to marry your aesthetic couplings effortlessly.

Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern

While industrial and geometric styles have been popular for a couple of years now, we see art deco returning to the fashion scene. This design movement has its origins in the late 1920s and has varied in popularity over the years. It influenced many aspects of the mid-century modern design that would follow.

While you may be well-informed on art deco furniture, you may not be familiar with the lighting pieces that conform to this style. They tend to focus on the abstract; yet, remain fun and playful. Industrial designs emphasize functionality over form, while art deco and mid-century modern tries to mix the two in a whimsical way.
